WHAT WE DO
Hearty Hog’s Veterans BBQ Camp is a veteran-run nonprofit 501c3 organization that is deeply passionate about its mission. We take pride in providing all interested veterans with the opportunity to learn the therapeutic skill of cooking BBQ. This includes everything from selecting the proper cuts of meat and preparing it to the most gratifying part: serving it to friends and family. And let’s not overlook the sides; they are an integral part of the BBQ experience that we cover extensively at our BBQ camps.
As a complementary therapy aimed at alleviating the mental and emotional effects of military service, our program has proven effective in reducing stress, helping veterans reintegrate into civilian life, and providing a nurturing environment alongside fellow vets. While our heroes’ hands may never forget their service weapons, our goal is to help fill that void by utilizing offset BBQ smokers as a positive substitute.
Since 2020, we have taught many veterans the art of “low and slow cooking” at our Hearty Hog Veterans BBQ Camp, and we are just getting started. Numerous past veteran camp alumni have reached out to us to express their gratitude and appreciation for their experiences at our camps. In response, we created a network that links veterans with one another to share their newfound BBQ cooking skills.
Many camp alumni have used their BBQ cooking skills to assist others. For instance, in August 2021, when unprecedented flooding devastated parts of Tennessee, several alumni from the Hearty Hog Veterans BBQ Camp quickly mobilized with their smokers to Waverly, TN. Led by founder and President Frank Magana, along with 20 camp alumni, they reached ground zero in less than 24 hours and served approximately 450 flood victims, first responders, and volunteers free of charge.
Not only did flood victims and first responders express their gratitude for the help from our Veterans BBQ Camp Alumni, but they also witnessed firsthand how BBQ can serve as a means of support. Many veterans who have attended our BBQ camps return to serve as instructors and volunteers, passing on the knowledge they gained to the next group of veteran campers, thereby paying it forward to their fellow brothers and sisters.
Frank and the board of directors at The Hearty Hog Veterans BBQ Camp are honored to provide a nurturing, caring, and stress-free environment for all veterans to learn and refine their BBQ skills. Our ultimate goal is to create an extensive nationwide network of both past and present camp attendees, allowing veterans to build lifelong friendships through the art of BBQ.
